Iran Strongly Opposed to Any Geopolitical Change Across Region: Top Diplomat

Alwaght- Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian reiterated the Islamic Republic's outright opposition to whatever geopolitical change in the region and manipulation of the regional countries' borders.

The top Iranian diplomat underlined the matter during a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov in New York on Friday. Amir-Abdollahian was in the city as part of a ranking Iranian delegation, led by President Ebrahim Raeisi, for the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Islamic Republic, he added, was prepared to assist both Azerbaijan and its neighbor Armenia to resolve their disputes.

"The Islamic Republic is prepared to help the two sides of the dispute to resolve the differences between them peacefully, through consultation with the countries' officials," Amir-Abdollahian said.

The recent weeks have witnessed resumption of deadly clashes between the two sides over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Around 200 forces have been killed from each side during the firefight. A ceasefire ended the bloodletting, but the situation remains tense around the common border.

Each side has blamed the other for eruption of the clashes.

This was the most recent flare-up in tensions between the two Caucasus neighbors since over 65,000 people were killed in a 44-day war over Nagorno-Karabakh that ended in November 2020.

The ex-Soviet countries have been locked in a decades-old conflict over the region, which is internationally recognized to be part of Azerbaijan, but has a primarily Armenian population that has resisted Azerbaijani rule since a separatist war that ended in 1994.

For his part, Bayramov rejected taking place of any changes in the region's geopolitical arrangement.

He expressed Baku's readiness for expeditious resolution of territorial and border disagreements with Yerevan through "intraregional cooperation."
