Looking at Iran’s Lawsuit against US at ICJ

Alwaght- The Iranian envoy to the UN has called for the international community to respect an order by the International Court of Justice earlier this month on the invalidity of the US sanctions on Iran and the need for them to be lifted.

Ambassador Gholamali Khoshroo was addressing the UN General Assembly on Thursday. He asked Washington to refrain from actions that will make things worse, continuing that the US administration should implement the provisional order by the UN court, adding that this will help with strengthening the role of the UN organs like the ICJ.

“Moreover, to help preserve the primary role of the International Court of Justice as the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, other states are also expected to refrain from assisting the US in imposing any impediments in transactions involving specified items, which would amount to violation of the court’s order and would be tantamount to providing assistance to the wrongdoer," he added.

The ICJ issued an order on October asking the US to lift the recently imposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic. Earlier, Tehran filed a suit with the court, calling the re-imposition of sanctions on Tehran illegal.

The court called on Washington to remove the restrictions on humanitarian trade, food, civil aviation, and medicine.

The verdict read that the US “shall remove by means of its choosing any impediments arising from the measures announced on May 8 to the free exportation to Iran of medicines and medical devices, food, and agricultural commodities”.

“The court's unanimous order was a clear testament to the illegality of the US sanctions against our country and its people," the Iranian diplomat told the UNGA.

Trump pulled out of 2015 Iran nuclear deal on May 8, saying he will reinstate the sanctions in stages. Part of the sanctions on Tehran returned at the time while others are expected to go into effect on November 6.

The world in united voice called on the US president to avoid pullout of the deal. But he insisted on his intention, arguing that the deal did not help much to stop Iran nuclear ambitions.

Trump claims come while Iran stopped enriching uranium and accepted the strictest supervision regime on its nuclear facilities and activities. The International Atomic Energy Agency issues regular reports on its mission in Iran, each time asserting Tehran’s compliance with the terms of the deal.

In 2015, Iran signed an agreement with world powers in exchange for the relief of sanctions.
