Demonstrators in Scotland Demand Independence from UK

Demonstrators in Scotland Demand Independence from UK

Alwaght- A massive rally has been held in Glasgow calling for Scottish independence from the United Kingdom.

Organizers All Under One Banner estimate that 17,000 people marched through Glasgow in the event, which they said was "the biggest Indy march in Scottish history".

Police estimated that between 13,500 and 15,000 people took part in the march and said it appeared to have passed off peacefully.

The procession started from Kelvingrove Park in the city’s west end at around 10:30am, before making its way to the historic Glasgow Green Park on the north bank of the River Clyde.

The marchers want a second referendum on Scottish independence in light of last year’s Brexit vote, which took the UK out of the EU.

Britain's move to leave the European Union has polarized the country with Scotland now demanding full independence from London.

The United Kingdom also known as Britain is composed of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with the last three having devolved administrations.

The four regions went different ways during the June 2016 Brexit referendum, with majorities in England and Wales voting to leave the EU while the majorities in Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain. This very divisive outcome has led to both Scotland and Northern Ireland demanding a re-evaluation of with the two other components of the UK.

Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Nicola Sturgeon has often argued that Scotland should be able to choose whether to stay in the EU or follow the rest of the UK.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has repeatedly said “now is not the time” for a debate about Scottish independence, which should wait until the end of the Brexit process.

But a recent YouGov poll shows the possibility of a hung parliament, with the ruling Conservatives losing many of their seats to Labor, thus giving the SNP an advantage.
