ALWAGHT- Russia supported Syria in combating terrorism and restoring stability after 2015, but further measures were left to the Syrian government, stated Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
"Some time ago, Russia assisted the Syrian Arab Republic in fighting terrorism and stabilizing the region when the situation threatened the entire area. We made significant efforts toward that goal, and once that mission was accomplished, Russia completed its role," Peskov explained.
"Following that, it was the Assad government that took the lead in managing the country and working towards its development, but unfortunately, the situation evolved as it did," he continued, adding, "Now, we must proceed according to the realities on the ground."
When asked about how a potential change in Syria's government might impact Russia's geopolitical influence in the Middle East, Peskov emphasized that "Russia engages in dialogue with all countries in the region."
"We are committed to continuing this approach," Peskov concluded.
