West Seeking to Kill Chance for Political End to Syria Crisis: Syrian FM

West Seeking to Kill Chance for Political End to Syria Crisis: Syrian FM

Alwaght- Some Western countries attempt to sabotage prospects for a political end to Syria crisis after failing to advance their agenda on the battlefield, Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said on Tuesday.

Faisal Mekdad said “I firmly believe that the entire occupied Syrian territories will be ultimately liberated. Syrian nationals also hold the opinion that each and every constituent part of our country will be soon repatriated,” Press TV reported.

He noted, “Having failed in their military aggression on Syria, Western countries are now trying to strike down the country through political means.”

Mekdad said the West had not succeeded in imposing its will on Syria either through terrorism or military actions, and is currently seeking to aggravate the situation and impede the political settlement of the Syrian crisis.

The top Syrian diplomat blasted Western countries over failure to come up with a political solution to the Syrian crisis and said they had not shied away from hostile actions against the Damascus government.

Mekdad also strongly condemned Turkey’s military occupation of Syrian lands and said the move had created an obstacle to the resolution of the Syrian conflict.

He said the United States’ support for various militant groups in northeastern Syria was in line with its pressure on the Damascus government to stop anti-terror operations against terrorists operating in the area.

‘Syria has emerged victorious in fight against terror’

Meanwhile, a senior advisor to Syrian president Bashar al-Assad praised the Arab country’s triumph over the foreign-sponsored militancy it was grappling with.

Speaking at the Diplomatic Institute of the Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Muscat on Tuesday, Bouthaina Shaaban elaborated on the foreign-backed campaign against Syria’s independence, economic resources and national identity.

“Arab countries cannot turn into a regional power unless they cooperate with each other, and fully secure their mutual interests,” she said.

Since 2011, Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy, leading to the emergence of Daesh and other terrorist groups in the Arab country.

The Syrian government has also repeatedly condemned the US and the EU for waging economic terrorism on the country through their unilateral sanctions, holding them responsible for the suffering of the Syrian people, especially now that the country is grappling with a deadly coronavirus outbreak.

Damascus has also been critical of the United Nations for remaining silent on the destructive role of the US and EU, among other parties supporting terrorism in Syria.
