Sudan’s President Arrives in Syria; First Visit by Arab Leader Since 2011

Alwaght- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday, becoming the first Arab leader to the warn-torn country Syrian 2011.

President Bashar al Assad welcomed him at the airport, before they both headed to the presidential palace, where they held talks on bilateral relations and the latest developments in Syria and the region, according to the state-run SANA news agency.

President Assad was quoted as saying his country would remain committed to its “Arab identity” despite the conflict in which some Arab countries, led by Saudi Arabia, fuelled it by arming and financing militant and terrorist groups in a bid to to oust Assad’s government.

The reason for Mr Al Bashir's visit was not immediately clear. But with the war in Syria winding down in favor of President Assad as Syrian army has liberated key cities and population centers from militants, some Arab officials have expressed interest to normalize ties with Damascus and even give it back its seat in the Arab League. Syria was expelled from the 22-member Arab League soon after war broke out in 2011.
