Turkish Army Stands Guard Near Syrian Border

Turkish army has killed at least two people protesting its effort to wall off the Syrian Kurdish region

Alwaght- Turkish army has killed at least two people protesting its effort to wall off the northern Syria, Kurdish-language Rudaw television network reported on Friday.

Turkey is constructing a barrier wall along its border with Syria which will block communication among the Kurds on both sides of the border.

The construction is going on near Syrian city of Kobane while many Syrians protested the move. Turkish army soldiers fired tear gas and live ammunition to break up dozens of Kurdish demonstrators.

At least 40 people were injured during the protests against while angry Syrians were calling an end to “Turkish Occupation”.

Turkey shares a more than 900 km border with Syria and since the liberation of Kobane from ISIS on 27 June, 2015, Ankara declared a plan to build barrier walls on its bored with this city fearing that empowered Syrian Kurds will affect the southern Turkish Kurd regions already in a renewed conflict with the government.

The Turkish barrier wall project is being implemented from the Mursitpinar crossing with a depth of 20m inside northern Syria territory.

Turkey has previously built barrier walls on its borders with the cities of Qamishli, Derik and Afrin in north Syria.

Since the onset of Syrian crisis and following central government's involvement in fighting against terrorists, Kurds have been seeking to establish a self-governing Kurdish region, Rojava, in northern Syria.

Kurd's measure, however, has been rejected by Syrian government, neighboring countries, as well as international powers.

US Secretary of State John Kerry expressed Washington's opposition to the establishment of the Kurdish region in northern Syria on August 26 during a joint news conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

"We do not support an independent Kurd initiative,” Kerry said, adding that the US supports a united Syria, which Kurds should have a part in.

Lavrov, too, rejected Kurd's provocative plan, saying “They [Kurds] should remain part of the Syrian state, and they should be part of the solution rather than an actor that’s going to be used to atomize and fragment Syria".
